Lisa Munnelly is an artist based in Wellington New Zealand, whose drawing practice is a close and constant study of materiality, an examination of the relationship between mind, matter, action and form. Striving to eliminate arbitrary aesthetics, Munnelly devises and adheres to strict frameworks in
her work. This restraint in colour, mark and material highlights the physicality of mark-making, and her concern with movement and the process of articulation across the drawing surface. A signature of Munnelly’s work is its embodiment of both economy and excess, formal constraints within the work contrast with the scale and materiality of her drawings.
